A4 paper size and photo layouts

A4 paper measures exactly 210 × 297 mm. Use these millimetre dimensions for layout calculations; the familiar rounded inch values are display conversions, not a replacement definition.

Sheet dimensions

A4 can hold a single photo or a small grid, provided the image dimensions, gaps, and margins all fit. Landscape A4 is the same sheet with 297 mm across and 210 mm down. Changing orientation does not stretch the photo or change its requested physical size.

A layout at actual size

On landscape A4, arrange four landscape 5 × 3.5 inch frames in two columns and two rows with a 4 mm gap. Each frame is 127 × 88.9 mm, and the complete grid is 258 × 181.8 mm. Centred on the sheet, it leaves 19.5 mm at each side and 14.1 mm above and below.

Margins and printing limits

An 8 × 10 inch portrait image fits on A4 with 3.4 mm at the sides and 21.5 mm at the top and bottom. Those narrow side margins may exceed a device’s capabilities. An 8 × 12 print does not fit at actual size because its 304.8 mm long edge exceeds the sheet.

The spaces in the example are calculated from the paper and image rectangles. They are not a device-specific margin recommendation. Match the PDF page to the loaded paper and check a physical calibration mark before relying on the final dimensions.
