Choose what you want to find

When you know the source pixels and a PPI value, divide each pixel edge by PPI to find inches. When you know the physical photo size, divide the pixels actually used by each physical edge to find effective PPI.

If the image and target have different ratios, choose fill or fit before interpreting the result. The original full-width and full-height values cannot both be forced onto a different frame shape without cropping, borders, or distortion.

For Print size → pixels, each edge is rounded up to a whole pixel so the result meets the selected PPI. An exact 10 × 15 cm target at 300 PPI requires 1182 × 1772 pixels; the result remains a valid integer pixel input for comparisons and reports.

A 6000 × 4000 example

At 300 PPI, the uncropped source corresponds to 20 × 13⅓ inches, or 50.8 × 33.8666… cm. At 240 PPI, the same pixels correspond to 25 × 16⅔ inches. Changing the planning value does not change the original image.

Use the unit controls to compare measurements without retyping rounded conversions. One inch is exactly 25.4 mm. The displayed decimal may be rounded while the calculation retains a more precise value.

Read effective PPI honestly

PPI describes pixel density at the selected physical size. It cannot guarantee sharpness, colour, or a particular quality of print. Inspect the image and consider the output method and viewing conditions alongside the number.

A manual calculation is based only on the numbers you enter. It does not verify the source file or show what a composition-sensitive crop will remove. Open the image when you need those checks.

Keep a report or continue to a layout

A numerical summary PDF records the calculation. It is a report rather than a photograph placed at physical scale. To export a cropped image or a paper-layout PDF, open the source and continue to the relevant tool.

Keep original image data separate from a resolution label. PrintLilt’s default image export does not enlarge the retained source pixels merely to match a target PPI.
