An exact two-up layout
A4 is 210 × 297 mm. Turn each 4 × 6 photo to landscape so its width is 152.4 mm and height is 101.6 mm. Two rows plus a 5 mm gap occupy 208.2 mm vertically. Centring that group leaves 44.4 mm above and below it. The horizontal space is 57.6 mm, or 28.8 mm on each side.
This calculation uses the full page coordinates. The preset also requires at least 5 mm of margin. The actual arrangement leaves more than that because the photo group is smaller than the available page. Those values are layout choices, not a claim that every printer can print with a 5 mm margin.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Paper | A4 portrait · 210 × 297 mm |
| Each frame | 6 × 4 in · 152.4 × 101.6 mm |
| Grid | 1 column × 2 rows |
| Gap | 5 mm |
| Left and right space | 28.8 mm each |
| Top and bottom space | 44.4 mm each |
Open the layout preset
Open the print layout tool from the related links and choose “Two 4 × 6 photos on A4”. Then select a local photo. The preset sets two copies, a one-column grid, crop marks, and the exact dimensions above. A selected photo stays on your device; the page creates the PDF in your browser.
- Choose the two-photo A4 preset in Print layout.
- Open a JPEG, PNG, or WebP photo and check that its visible orientation is correct.
- Choose Fill to cover each frame, or Fit to keep the entire image with borders.
- Inspect both placements, then download the PDF. Enable the separate 50 mm calibration page if you need to measure your printer’s scale.
Check crop and resolution before exporting
A 3:2 landscape photo matches a 6 × 4 inch frame. A 4:3 or square photo does not: Fill crops it and Fit leaves space within the frame. Changing the grid does not remove that difference. Move the crop before export if an important face or edge is near a trim line.
For an uncropped 6 × 4 inch photo at 300 PPI, the corresponding pixel dimensions are 1800 × 1200. The effective PPI display uses the pixels retained after your crop. It is arithmetic, not a guarantee of sharpness or colour. Review a test print when the output matters.
Keep the PDF at 100%
The PDF already contains the two placements on one A4 page. Select A4 paper and Actual size or 100% in the PDF viewer and printer driver. Do not apply an additional “multiple pages per sheet” setting to this prepared layout, because that creates a second layout stage and may reduce the photographs. Disable fit-to-page scaling when measuring the intended size.
Printer margins depend on the device, paper, and selected print mode. If the viewer says content is outside the printable area, check the device’s instructions. The generous outer space in this example does not establish support for other layouts or borderless printing. A correctly sized PDF also cannot compensate for a driver that rescales it.
More copies and different photos
This preset repeats the same source image. To print two different photographs, prepare separate files or use software that supports multiple independent images on a sheet. PrintLilt currently has one source photo per project, so do not expect the second placement to have a separate file picker.
Increase the Copies field when you need more of the same photo. The tool creates additional sheets while keeping the frame dimensions, gap, and grid. A three-copy job uses two A4 image pages with this preset; a calibration page, when enabled, is an additional page. Check the page count and printer range before sending a large job.
