Keep your original photo unchanged

A print crop is one interpretation of a photograph. Keep the original so another size, orientation, or composition remains possible. PrintLilt works with a selected local file and creates separate downloads; it does not need to overwrite the source to prepare a print.

Separate the source from the derivative

The source contains the image you brought to the task. A cropped PNG or JPEG contains the result you chose for a particular frame. If the export is smaller or has discarded edges, it cannot stand in for the complete original in a later composition.

Use a clear filename for the exported result and check the download location. A new filename helps you distinguish the print version from the source, but the underlying protection is keeping the original file itself in your normal file storage or backup.

Understand the working session

While the photo is open, the browser holds the working image needed for preview and export. A temporary object URL is a reference within that browser session, not a durable copy of the photo. Closing or refreshing the page can remove that temporary access.

A preview that appeared earlier is therefore not evidence that the image can be recovered later. When a project has only parameters, PrintLilt asks you to choose the original again. It should not show a fictitious restored photo merely because the crop settings are available.

Save parameters for repeatability

A project records choices such as physical size, fit mode, position, rotation, paper, margins, and repeated layout settings. The downloaded versioned JSON also includes source-file information used to help identify the intended original. It does not embed the image bytes or a reusable temporary blob URL.

Keep the JSON with the source if you want to reproduce the result. Reopening the JSON restores the instructions, and choosing the matching source restores the image. A file with a similar name but different dimensions may not reproduce the same crop.

Store the original locally only when you choose to

The local save option can include the original photo after explicit selection. The image is stored in this browser’s local database, and its size counts toward the browser’s available storage. A parameter-only save is smaller and leaves the original in your own files.

Browser storage is not a backup guarantee. It can be cleared by you, restricted by privacy settings, become unavailable, or be removed under storage management. Downloading the project parameters does not export an original that was saved only in the browser.

Use a routine you can recover from

Keep the source in a known folder. Make the crop and layout, export the required files, and open the downloads to verify them. Save the project when you want to repeat the setup. If you use local original storage, delete the project and stored photo when you no longer need them.

Clearing a local project does not remove copies already downloaded elsewhere, and deleting a downloaded JSON file does not clear browser storage. Manage each copy where it actually lives. This separation keeps a useful print derivative from accidentally becoming the only version of the photograph you can find.
