Choose the shape
This is a useful comparison when selecting a small framed portrait or moving from a 4 × 6 print. Keep the original available so you can adjust the crop independently instead of cropping an already cropped export again.
| Property | Example |
|---|---|
| Matching landscape pixels | 4200 × 3000 |
| Example print size | 5 × 7 inches |
| Equivalent orientation | 7:5 landscape |
Fill the frame
A 6000 × 4000 landscape source filling a 7 × 5 inch frame retains 5600 × 4000 pixels. That provides 800 PPI and removes about 6.67% of the original area. A centred crop removes 200 pixels from each side.
Keep the whole photo
Keeping the full source at seven inches wide produces an image 4⅔ inches high. In a 7 × 5 frame it leaves one-sixth inch above and below when centred. Its effective PPI is about 857.14. The smaller border may be preferable to losing a subject near the side.
What the ratio cannot tell you
A5 paper and a 5 × 7 inch photo are different rectangles. A5 can hold that photo with a border, but using the paper’s own ratio as the crop target changes the shape. Set the photo and paper sizes independently.
