3:5 aspect ratio for photo prints

A 3:5 portrait ratio becomes 5:3 in landscape. The landscape form is wider than 3:2 but less elongated than 16:9, providing a distinct crop option between those two familiar shapes.

Choose the shape

Use an explicit custom size such as 15 × 9 inches when you want this exact ratio. This guide does not create a separate photo-size entity for every possible multiple. The ratio and calculator handle those values without duplicating the directory.

Fill the frame

A 6000 × 4000 source filling a landscape 15 × 9 inch rectangle retains 6000 × 3600 pixels. It removes 400 pixels of height, or 10% of the original area, and gives 400 PPI. A centred crop removes 200 pixels from the top and bottom.

Keep the whole photo

Keeping the whole image in that same frame produces a 13.5 × 9 inch picture. Centred placement leaves 0.75 inch on each side, with about 444.44 effective PPI. This can be useful if the upper and lower edges contain detail you want to retain.

What the ratio cannot tell you

Do not mistake 3:5 for 3:4 or 2:3 merely because their printed sizes use some of the same numbers. Reduce the complete width-to-height pair, or let the tool compare it, before reusing a crop. The relationship is mathematical and independent of the unit.
