Bring your photo into the picture

Open a local JPEG, PNG or WebP to preview the crop and export real files.

Drag the frame, or use the position controls. Arrow keys move 1%; Shift + Arrow moves 10%.

Why the edges change

The image and frame have different shapes. Fill crops the image; fit preserves it and adds borders. Neither stretches the photo.

Choose fill or fit

Fill the frame selects the largest source region with the target ratio and uses the whole frame. Keep the whole photo scales the complete source to fit inside it, leaving space where the two shapes differ. Both preserve the proportions of the scene.

For a 4000 × 3000 image in a 10 × 8 inch landscape frame, fill retains 3750 × 3000 pixels at 375 PPI. Fit places the image at 10 × 7.5 inches at 400 PPI, with quarter-inch borders above and below.

Protect the subject

Move the crop with the preview or use the position controls for a keyboard alternative. Check heads, hands, text, and the horizon. A small percentage of removed area can still contain something essential.

Set the correct photo and frame orientations before refining the position. A quarter-turn swaps width and height; a position that worked before rotation may not protect the same visual edge afterward.

Read the measurements together

The retained pixels describe the source region used. Removed area describes the share excluded by fill. Border dimensions describe unused frame space in fit. Effective PPI connects the retained image to its physical placement.

These measurements do not predict paper colour, print sharpness, or the visible opening of a frame lip. The preview is a composition guide and does not have a fixed physical scale on your screen.

Export the result you intend

Download photo pixels as JPEG or PNG. Select the complete target frame explicitly when fit borders should be included. PNG supports a transparent or solid background; JPEG requires a solid background.

For a photo placed on a sheet at a known size, continue to Print layout and export its PDF. Keep the original so another frame size can use content that this crop removes.
